The Choctaws - Arkansas Gazette - November 28, 1837
In the
early part of this month, we understand, that 500 Choctaw warriors
made a rendezvous at the Agency, with the view of entering into
the service of the government, for the Florida campaign. But, on
learning the mistake as to their pay, they declined proceeding any
farther, and disbanded, not without a show of decided chagrin - as
they supposed it an intentional error on the part of the Secretary of
War. They tore off their plumes, washed the paint from their
faces, and retired in disgust.
They took up from the merchants in the Indian
district, more than $20,000 worth goods, intended for this expedition,
which they have not settled for. It was altogether as
unfortunate occurrence, as the warriors are not now wanting - and it
is calculated to inflame rather than allay the discontents on the
frontier. It also places the government agents in an awkward
predicament.
