John Titcomb Sprague was
born July 3, 1810 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Sprague’s father was
a surgeon in the U.S. army and served in Detroit Michigan while Lewis
Cass was there. After Cass was appointed Secretary of War, he gave
Sprague a position on his staff. Sprague worked for Cass until 1834
when he was appointed as an officer in the Marine Corps. Lieutenant
Sprague assisted in the removal of the Creeks. Sprague was assigned to
Florida during the Seminole War. After the war with the Seminoles,
Sprague was assigned to their removal to Oklahoma. He retired from
military service in 1870. Sprague is also the author of a book, “The
Origin, Progress and Conclusion of the Florida War,” based on his
experiences during the Seminole War in Florida. He passed away in New
York on September 6, 1878.
