George Gibson (1783-1861), a native of Pennsylvania, a soldier from his youth, reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel during the war of 1812.  He served with Andrew Jackson during the so-called “First Seminole War,” became Commissary General in 1818, and in 1826 reached the brevet rank of Brigadier General. He served as Commissary General during the Indian removal, overseeing the logistics of removing thousands of tribal people during the 1830s.
