Captain Jacob Brown
to C.A. Harris Esquire,
Commissioner of Indian Affairs
Little Rock
July 10, 1837
Sir
Herewith I have the honor to transmit Contract
with Bonds, extend into for furnishing the Creek Emigrants in their
new Country with Subsistence for 12 months, commencing on the 1st of
April next—including such Seminoles may be emigrated to their New
Country from the 30” line, next, to the 31st of Mary, 1838.
I also cover an Abstract of the Bids receiving
The furnishing is taken on better terms than I
had reason to expect; and is in some measure owing to the short period
of payment bring monthly if required—enabling twenty enterprising men
without much capital, to undertake the furnishing. I must therefore
request that the agent at this office for always keep in funds; to
meet the payments when called for. The Contract will amount to about
half a million of Dollars. Of the number made on the 25” November last
$200.000, then will remain on have applicable to this contract about
$100.000; which will meet the calls for April and May.
The Seminoles inhabit the same country with the
Creeks. I therefore deemed it best to include in this contract the
furnishing of all those that might emigrate to this new country, the
ensuing season after the expiration of the Contract—30th June, next—by
which they are now subsisted. This will do away the necessity of
making a Contract should any of that tribe hereafter be emigrated.
Respectfully
I have the honor to be
Your Obt. Ser.
J. Brown Capt USA
