Captain J. Brown, USA to C.A. Harris, Commissioner of Indian Affairs

Little Rock

January 18, 1837

Sir,

Mr. Boyd reached this on the 13th inst. on his way to Fort Gibson, with 3500 blankets for the Creek Emigrants, in their New Country. The navigation of the River will not admit the passage of Steam Boats further up than this place, at this time. We have therefore procured a Keel Boat to receive the property, and the same was got under way, and left here this morning for destination. The first Steam Boat that passes up will be engaged should the keel be overtaken—to take the same in tow, as far as the Steamer’s destination or the navigation of the River will permit.

The course adopted to send forward the Blankets is the only one that can insure their reaching the Creeks before March next. In the mean time if the River takes a rise, their arrival may be speeded by the aid of steam.

The roads to the upper country are at this time impassible for wagons and teams—made so more than usual at this season of the year by the next Creek Emigration. Respectfully
I have the honor to be

Your Obt. Ser

J. Brown Capt USA
