Forced removal of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee Creek, Chickasaw and Seminole from their ancestral homelands in the southeastern United States was one of the policies formulated during President Andrew Jackson's administration. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, setting in motion Jackson's removal policy. These forced removals became known as the Trail of Tears.

In 1838, despite public outcry and legal challenges against the policy, the Cherokee Nation removal began.
