HISTORICAL NOTE

Rick Heredia, Northern Paiute, graduated from California State University, Fresno, with a BA degree in journalism in 1981 and from the Institute for Journalism Education, University of California, Berkeley, in 1982. While he was a student at Fresno, he worked for the Fresno American Indian Council and published a tabloid, California Indian Journal. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for the Modesto Bee (1982-1983), the Fort Collins Coloradoan (1983-1986), and the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph (1986-1988) before becoming a feature writer for the Bakersfield Californian in 1989. He remained with the Californian until joining the staff of DQ University, Davis, in 1996 as Public Affairs Officer and Resource Specialist. Heredia has won a number of journalism awards, including being named a Howard Simons Fellow in Journalism in 1992. His collection contains materials related to his career history and his writing.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PAPERS

The Rick Heredia Collection contains correspondence, biographical materials related to his journalism career, and copies of his features, clipped primarily from the Bakersfield Californian. The collection covers the period 1986 through 1999.
