HISTORICAL NOTE

Susan M. Arkeketa, Otoe-Missouri and Muscogee (Creek), has worked for nonprofit Indian organizations such as the Oklahoma City Native American Center, the Native American Rights Fund, and the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA).  She served the latter as executive director when it was known as the Native American Press Association (NAPA) and later as a member of the board of directors.  She has taught writing and speech at Haskell Indian Nations University, Tulsa Community College, and the University of Phoenix.  She continues to work as a freelance writer and consultant to tribes and organizations.  Most items in the collection relate to Arkeketa’s journalism career.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

The Susan M. Arkeketa Collection contains correspondence; typescripts and printed matter related to the Native American Press Association (later Native American Journalists Association ); publications, including newsletters, sponsored by NAJA; and printed matter related to issues in Indian Country.  Materials cover the period 1985 to 1998.
