HISTORICAL NOTE

The American Indian Library Association is a membership action group that addresses the library-related needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Members are individuals and institutions interested in the development of programs to improve Indian library, cultural, and informational services in school, public, and research libraries on reservations. AILA is also committed to disseminating information about Indian cultures, languages, values, and information needs to the library community. AILA cosponsors an annual conference and holds a yearly business meeting in conjunction with the American Library Association annual meeting. It publishes the American Indian Libraries Newsletter, which appears in four issues per year.

John D. Berry is former President of the American Indian Library Association and past President of the Oklahoma State University’s Native American Faculty and Staff Association. He holds a BA and an MA in Anthropology with a specialization in Biblical Archaeology, and holds an  MLIS from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  He has served on the American Library Association's Council as a Counselor at Large, and ALA Task Force for Rural Public School and Tribal Libraries, and is also a Member at Large for ICANN.  He has worked as reference librarian in a small liberal arts college; as head of technical services in a US Department of Defense library; as a Medical Librarian for Reference and Special Projects in the US Food and Drug Administration; and as a reference librarian with collection development responsibilities for the academic areas of history, philosophy, education, music, Native American and African American materials for the Oklahoma State University.  He is currently in charge of the Native American Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies Collections within the Ethnic Studies Library, at the University of California Berkely.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

The AILA Collection consists of materials related to the American Indian Library Association and its members. Materials cover the period 1969 to 2003.
