HISTORICAL NOTE

Dan Agent worked as a writer, reporter, and photographer for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma from 1984 to 1991, when he became a public affairs specialist at the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution.   He served as Director of Public Affairs of the Cherokee Nation, from February 27, 1996, to August 15, 1997.  His responsibilities included planning and implementing of a comprehensive public affairs program for the Cherokee Nation, including publication of the Cherokee Advocate.  He was dismissed from his position by Cherokee officials because of his reporting of Cherokee political issues.  He worked briefly as a public relations official for the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe before returning to the Cherokee Advocate after the election of Chadwick Smith as Chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1999. The question of free press guarantees raised by Agent’s dismissal created dialogue that led to establishment of the Cherokee Advocate as an independent press.  The Dan Agent Collection relates primarily to the Cherokee constitutional crisis between 1996 and 1999.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

The Dan Agent Collection contains news clippings from northeastern Oklahoma newspapers from 1997 to 2002, related primarily to the constitutional debate in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, 1996 to 1999.  It also contains legislative acts, Constitution of Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, correspondence, and  publications by Agent related to First Amendment rights.  Materials cover the period of 1997 to 2003.
