Indian Voices
from the Trails of Tears is a collection of writing by American
Indians who were involved with the removal of Indigenous Nations from
their traditional homelands in the nineteenth century. While the term
Trails of Tears has been applied to the removal of tribal groups from
the American Southeast to Indian Territory, we use it to apply to the
forced resettlement of Indian nations from other parts of the country
as well.
The writings
include narratives by survivors, family stories, memoirs, poetry, and
essays concerning removal policy. We have excluded accounts from
non-Indian sources, as these are available elsewhere. Additional
texts will be added as they become available.
Indian Voices
from the Trails of Tears is a part of the Native Writers Digital Text
Project, an attempt to bring writing by American Indians and Alaska
Natives to the attention of readers world wide via the Internet. Comments
or questions should be addressed to James W. Parins at
jwparins@ualr.edu or phone 501.569.8325.
