COURAGE

I know not the way that’s before me,

      The joys or the griefs it may bring;

What clouds are o’erhanging the future,

      What promises beyond it may spring.

But there’s one my refuge did take

      And this is my solace and comfort.

My conventions did plead for me

      Of my wants and of my being;

My councils did council for me

      To the powers that rule for soccer [succor?].

Fresh courage take, my dear braves,

      The dark clouds are ever unfolding

Your light to see before you, and ways.

      Yield not to slumber, tho’ with toil oppressed,

Yield not to fear for the way is bright.

      The summit will ere long be gained

And bright world of joy and peace attained.

      Joyful through hope your motto still be

“Human Rights and Home Rule.”

      What glories will Mission Indian Federation1 unfold to you.

Be of good mind, and cheer-take courage.

1. The Mission Indian Federation was organized in southern California; its membership comprised both Indians and whites.  Founded by Jonathan Tibbets of Riverside, the Federation opposed allotment of reservation lands and in many cases challenged the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  It was active in land claims issues.
