AN INDIAN CRADLE SONG

 Sleep, my little one, sleep away!
Above thee watching angels stray,
No harm can come to thee by day,
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!

Out of the heav’nly pools of space,
The stars look down upon thy face;
Child of beauty, charm and grace,
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!

Upon thy brow the pale moonlight,
Steals its kisses with delight,
No harm can come to thee by night,
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!

Soon the morn will dawn for thee,
Brighter days and joys to see;
Love’s young dream will come to thee,
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!

Growing on from day to day,
Leaving childhood far away;
On to manhood’s fuller day,
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!

Soon the birds will call to thee,
And thou, too, shall mated be;
Where the wild rose blooms for thee –
Sleep, my little one, sleep away!
